We all need role models.
For years this wasn’t a problem for me: As a twenty- and thirty-something the media was full of positive imagery of my peers.
But as I hit my mid-forties it seemed that I was now the wrong side of a bulge – all the positive imagery lay behind me – and there was not much left up ahead.
I bet you could name every role model that exists for the middle-aged woman – there aren’t that many of them. And as to where to find advice about how to present yourself – well, much of what I found was negative campaigning, jeering at mistakes and misjudgements. All very undermining at a time when you aren’t brim-full of confidence.
So let’s hear it for those brave and talented women who are willing to stand up to be counted as role models for those of us in our prime. And let me know who your candidates are!

InnerMutton is mostly about classic style re-interpreted. However, between you and me, I am also a big fan of pioneers like Linda Rodin and Iris Apfel.
