Roomy Denim

Hmm … what to wear for a trip to edgy Shoreditch, to visit the London store of Ally Capellino?

If you aren’t familiar with the brand, it is admired for the minimal contemporary styling of its bags, like these nappa leather rucksacks in spring colours.

Which (note to self) would work well with jeans and the New Balance gingham trainers I mentioned in my last post.

For spring/summer 2015, looser denim profiles are proliferating on the catwalk, so Toast has introduced a new cut: Artist Jeans are high-waisted in Japanese cotton selvedge denim. They come in sizes 6-18 and in regular and long options: these will do nicely for my day out!

The reason for the pilgrimage across town is that there has been a fresh delivery at Ally Capellino of silver Yoko rucksacks.

So here is my outfit for East London:

Toast Artist Jeans. Marks and Spencer two-tone bomber jacket. ASOS White Collection t-shirt. Superga Flatforms. Cos blue glass necklace.

And, of course, returning with the Ally Capellino Yoko rucksack.

Reasons to be cheerful

To mis-quote Dean Martin, the weather outside is frightful, but in my head it’s quite delightful.

I am in deepest Denial-shire and looking forward to warmer weather, longer days, and some spring additions to my wardrobe that will be available soon.  In my deluded state I have found these three reasons to be cheerful:

  1. A gingham trend for spring and summer 2015. I’ve always loved checks, as long as the look ends up more Hepburn/Kelly than Baby Jane.
  2. Flats, slides and sneakers are still cool. Because they are COMFORTABLE.
  3. Whistles are making a small version of their big hit ‘Verity’ backpack. A happy combination of practical and beautiful in one very useful bag!

With this in mind, I’m hatching plans for weekend sightseeing in European capitals – Paris and Rome, please! – and have already assembled an outfit that is adaptable, chic, and fashionable.

Cheerful

Black/white is a trend for the spring too, so this Hobbs Twitchill dress (super comfortable and just below the knee) is a double winner. Last summer I hankered after bright fluorescent trainers, but this year these New Balance gingham & mint 996 shoes are perfect. Boden’s cropped cashmere is a wardrobe staple. And to carry around my Euros, guidebooks, sunglasses, and perhaps a change of shoes for the evening – the Whistles backpack.

Making Good Better…

Which business do you wish you had founded?  Google?  Facebook?  Right now I’d probably plump for Rococco Chocolates.  But close to the top of my list you will always find The White Company: I love everything that Chrissie Rucker sells.

And now she has made good better by hiving off the most simple, classic items of clothing into a style edit entitled General Store.

The range includes jeans, cashmere, and the elegant white shirt (£70) shown above. All items are absolute classics, great staples.  That’s not to say that the main range doesn’t include classics, but this edit does have particular timeless appeal.

On the subject of white shirts, I had great success last year with this multipack from Marks and Spencer

shirts

These shirts are from the men’s range, and you need to try them on in store to be sure of the fit (I bought the smallest collar size) but at £30 for 3 you can’t really go wrong!

What is your approach to ‘boyfriend’ dressing?  Do you have any menswear recommendations for the girls?

Renaissance Trainers

Do you remember back in January when Karl Lagerfeld sent Cara Delevigne down the catwalk in a Chanel wedding dress and trainers?

from www.ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com

In my opinion this was the ultimate stamp of approval for the trainer’s elevation from gym to boardroom.  All summer we have been tempted by bold, bright colour from New Balance, Nike, etc. – and if the Nike store I visited in Edinburgh had had a 9.5 (that’s ‘Nike’ for UK7) in the purple/green I fancied, I might be wearing them as I type.  But, now I can see that the fates conspired to keep my pennies safe for what really must be the ultimate shoe…here she is (and yes, I think that she is a girl) Nike Air Max Thea in black.  Comfortable, stylish, smart, sharp – what more could you ask for?  I seem to be gravitating to greys and black at the moment, and this shoe is great with smart black slacks or skinny jeans.

Out of respect for convention – don’t forget I am a sheep – I’ve never worn trainers to a wedding or funeral, but I do wear them to work regularly and I see no reason not to wear these to all but the smartest events I might have to attend.  Definitely not mutton if styled as part of a monochromatic and minimalistic outfit – in fact with my mum’s lovely silver hair, now there’s a thought!
